چکیده

Scheduling interactions between humans and robots presents unique challenges—while robots do not have humans’ natural ability to improvise and adapt to new setbacks, humans are not able to work with the same precision as robots. Additionally, hesitation, interruptions, and anticipatory action all influence a human’s perception and efficiency in social tasks, but are not inherent features of current algorithms. This paper explores both the challenges and opportunities of automated scheduling as a useful tool for humanrobot interactions. We contribute an initial exploratory pilot study that suggests that when a robot takes the lead in dictating a schedule, there are gains in team efficiency without loss of humans’ perceived comfort.

Research Statement - K Talamadupula

I work on research problems centered around the theme of using automated planning systems as mediators for human-machine teams. Automated planning – a sub-field of Artificial Intelligence that deals with reasoning and the synthesis of plans for autonomous, intelligent agents – has seen many speedup and scalability advances in the past decades. Beginning with Shakey the robot and the STRIPS plan...

Representing Context Using the Context for Human and Automation Teams Model

The goal of representing context in a mixed initiative system is to model the information at a level of abstraction that is actionable for both the human and automated system. A potential solution to this problem is the Context for Human and Automation Teams (CHAT). This paper introduces the CHAT model and provides example implementations from several different applications such as task schedul...

Challenges in Collaborative Scheduling of Human-Robot Teams

We study the scheduling of human-robot teams where the human and robotic agents share decision-making authority over scheduling decisions. Our goal is to design AI scheduling techniques that account for how people make decisions under different control schema.

Human vs. Algorithmic Path Planning for Search and Rescue by Robot Teams

Substantial automation will be needed to allow operators to control the large teams of robots envisioned for search and rescue, perimeter patrol, and a wide variety of military tasks. Both analysis and research point to navigation and path planning as prime candidates for automation. When operators are isolated from robot navigation, however, there may be loss of situation awareness (SA) and di...

Dual Space Control of a Deployable Cable Driven Robot: Wave Based Approach

Known for their lower costs and numerous applications, cable robots are an attractive research field in robotic community. However, considering the fact that they require an accurate installation procedure and calibration routine, they have not yet found their true place in real-world applications. This paper aims to propose a new controller strategy that requires no meticulous calibration and ...
